Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS), is the only organization in New York State specifically designed to serve girls and young women who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. A little while ago I watched the documentary “Very Young Girls” that educated me and made me extremely passionate about this cause. The documentary focused on the wonderful work this organization does.
I decided to do an illustration showing how much a young woman who is safe can accomplish in terms of her own self-worth. Plus I wanted to draw a cute kid haha!

sirsirena asked: These comics are pretty accurate, which is commendable. My friends are frustrated with me, because I don't have any urge to get help. Even though all of them tell me I need to talk to someone, I can't make myself get better. I don't really know what to do. Anyways your blog helps, I just feel like no one understands me, and I can't find the words.
Here’s the thing — not having the urge to get help is one of the symptoms. Feeling helpless about your condition is one of the ways it manifests itself and keeps you in the hole. Obviously it’s best to try to get help, but that can seem like paddling upstream against the rapids.
To put it bluntly, depression convinces you that help is futile, a waste of time and energy, anything it can make you think of to ensure its own place in your brain. Your friends are frustrated with you because it’s logical that anyone who is ill would want help, but they don’t understand that people with depression have their own unique sense of logic tailored to keep the illness in place.
I hope you do get an urge to seek help at some point, because depression can be fatal. But I understand why you don’t want to. In the meantime, I hope you do understand that you’re not alone.
